Bid told Dolly that Jem had been seen coming out of Josie’s late at night, and that there was a lot of talk.

‘Let him,’ Dolly retorted. ‘She’s one of his own — a fish-dealer like his mother.’

But she didn’t believe a word of it. Jem wouldn’t throw her over for a common wan like Josie. Bid was a mischief-maker. Venting her spite because she couldn’t get Kevin back.

After her holiday in August she’d only have to snap her fingers and Jem would come running. Another few weeks wouldn’t kill her. Then she’d let him know she had decided to marry him. The wedding could be before next Lent. That would give her time to join a big money club for the wedding dress and everything.

In the meantime there was the holiday to prepare for. She learned the words of Roses in Picardy, it was all the rage. And there was bound to be singing in the Holiday Home. She bought a big straw hat and the makings of two light dresses, and one evening when her mother was out fished the torn camisole from behind the drawer and repaired it. Thinking while she did so of Jem and the morning after the hooley.

And the way time flew! Who’d have thought that they’d have been bad friends so long. July and them not recognizing each other still. But it definitely wasn’t true what Bid was saying about him and Josie. He wouldn’t have thrown her over for someone like Josie. Maybe he dropped in once or twice — but that could be to make her jealous. What a hope he had. Her jealous of Josie! Mind you, she had better not let this state of affairs carry on too long. As soon as she came back from her holidays she’d patch things up with him. He’d jump at the chance, for it was one thing for him to see her every day even if they didn’t speak but let her be away altogether and it would be a different story. She finished her mending and considered what things had to be done before she went away. Well, first she had to get the stuff to Miss Murtagh or she’d have not a new stitch to wear.

Miss Murtagh was saying the Rosary when Dolly arrived with her summer material. ‘Every night I say an extra round of my beads for all the brave men who gave their blood for Ireland, Lord have mercy on them. But their sacrifice wasn’t in vain. Mocked and jeered they were by their own and destroyed like mad dogs by the British. But they won’t be forgotten. It took their deaths to change the heart of the people, but changed it is. England put a nail in her own coffin when she had them executed.’

Dolly agreed with her then changed the subject by asking, ‘How’s business?’

‘Never better, thanks be to God and it’s you I have to thank. With all your recommendations, haven’t I the half of Jacobs’ coming to me.
